The Game Boy Advance was the fourth handheld video game system released by Nintendo. The system had backwards compatibility with Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

In December 2001, Nintendo released the Nintendo e-Reader, a peripheral for the Game Boy Advance that would read a barcode on cards, which would allow the device to play games, unlock features in games, or play Nintendo Entertainment System games through an emulator contained in the read only memory of the device.
